The UMass Lowell Student Environmental Alliance is excited about their first annual “Beat the Heat” event designed to promote awareness about climate change. It will take place from 12:30 – 3 p.m. on the lawn in front of the Campus Recreation Center at 100 Pawtucket Street across from LeLacheur Park.
It may be a heavy subject, but they are planning to make it a fun, family-friendly event with food, raffles and music in addition to the educational component.
Participating organizations include: the Society of Environmental Scientists
Solar Club, New Entry Sustainable Farming Project, Café Solar®, Climate Change Initiative, Lowell Green Building Commission, Free Wheelers, Cool Science/Science Express, Lowell Parks and Conservation Trust, Viridian Energy and UMass Lowell Community Garden.
Scheduled speakers include: Mayor Patrick Murphy; Dr. Juliette Rooney-Varga, director of the UML Climate Change Initiative; Dr. Ellen Douglas, a UMass Boston associate professor in Hydrology; Lowell Recycling and Waste Coordinator Gunther Wellenstein; and SEA Member Devan Hawkins.
